The Thief River and the Red Lake River meet in Thief River Falls, creating an excellent fishing destination. Whether you’re in waders, a boat, paddle board, ice house or just fishing from the bank, the opportunity for walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth bass, crappies and a host of other species is great!
Accessing the river is not a problem with two boat landings within the city limits. You can also get to the river through several city parks and below the dam.
Waterfowl and small game hunters coming to the Thief River Falls area should remember to pack a fishing rod! There is a fall run of walleyes in the Red Lake River and they will move upriver and hold below the dam in Millyard Park in October. A jig and minnow is all it takes! With parking lots on both sides of the river, access is easy.
Hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon. Visitors to Thief River Falls can have the best of both worlds!
